Turn Your Book In To An Audiobook: Steps for Authors and Rights Holders

     How to Make an Audiobook

  1. Confirm you have audio rights for your book by checking your print book contract. If you have the audio rights, then for purposes of ACX, you are a Rights Holder (RH)
  2. To begin a project on ACX, your book must be listed on Amazon.com. If you do not have a version of your book available in Kindle, Print, or Audio CD within the Amazon.com Book Section, visit www.kdp.com, Kindle Direct Publishing, to learn how to publish and sell your book on Amazon.com.

  3. Create an ACX account. You can use your existing Amazon email and password to log into ACX.

  4. Create a Title Profile by describing your book and the type of narrator best suited for it.

  5. Select your narrator/producer: Most first-time RH post their project and wait for Auditions, then select and offer. Fewer RH do a Search for narrators using keyword criteria and send an invitation to a few. Even fewer already know who they want to narrate already and make a direct offer without using an audition process. The big advantage of this is you already know who you will be working with!

  6. Go directly to my Narrators page ( https://tinyurl.com/ToddEflinNarrates ) and select the Make Offer button underneath my picture. Offer as Royalty Share, Royalty Share Plus, or Per Finished Hour.

  7. Get Started. I will accept the Offer and record and upload the 15 minute checkpoint of the audiobook, which you can approve or provide feedback. When the sample is approved, I will record the full project.

  8. Proof Listen. You can ask me to make up to two rounds of corrections to your finished audiobook. When you’re happy, you pay me directly, unless you agreed to a Royalty Share deal.

  9. Distribute. ACX distributes your audiobook through Audible, Amazon, and iTunes under both the exclusive and non-exclusive contracts. If you grant non-exclusive distribution rights, then you can distribute through additional channels.

  10. Promote. Promote the availability of your audiobook to your fans. Get started with great marketing advice in the Promote Yourself section.

  11. Earn royalties. You’ll receive a monthly digital royalty statement and payment from Audible via direct deposit, and you may track your progress using your Sales Dashboard.
